My unplanned road trip to O'Reilly's Rainforest Retreat

Updated: May 3

I am a compulsive planner when it comes to photography. I overthink things by building an image and expecting my photos to turn the same. It is upsetting when I fail, and I do most of the time. So this weekend, I decided to go easy on myself by not planning anything. On Saturday, I decided to go on a road trip and do location hunting instead.

I drove myself to Canungra and stopped by a cattle farm. The sight could have been more intriguing, so I went further up and stopped at O'Reilly's Vineyard. I could not find a parking spot, so I decided to turn around and drive further up. Then, I ended up at O'Reilly's Rainforest Retreat. The sun was about to set, so I flew my drone to locate Moran Falls and check out the water flow. I decided to stay the night at O'Reilly's campsite. This saved me from driving down the dark, winding roads of the mountains.

I managed to get some more sunset shots from the restaurant's balcony. As I was getting ready to settle in bed, the skies cleared, and I had the perfect opportunity to take some Astro photos. I was thrilled about this as this was my first genuine attempt at Milky Way photography this year. Also, the season was almost over. I seized the moment battling the cold winds. Overall, I am happy I made the trip and went with the flow.

Below are the shots from yesterday. The images were taken using Sony R7II (Tamron 17-35mm lens), Fujifilm X-T4 (Fujinon 24mm lens), and DJI Mavic Air 2. They are displayed in no particular order.
