My visit to South West Rocks

Updated: May 3

South West Rocks is a small coastal town at the mouth of the Macleay River. Flanked by sandy beaches and national parks, it’s known for its picturesque Norfolk pines, family-friendly atmosphere, intriguing colonial heritage and exceptional diving. This was my second visit to the town after falling in love with it on my first visit last year. My favorite part to visit here is the Smoky Cape Lighthouse.

The lighthouse was built in 1891 near South West Rocks and is one of the oldest working lighthouses in Australia. Like all lighthouses, it has a lot of history. This heritage lighthouse is one of the last designed by the Colonial Architect, James Barnet. Smoky Cape headland was named by Captain Cook after he saw Aboriginal fires burning there in 1770.

Smoky Cape is a fantastic spot for whale watching, birdwatching, and picnicking. You can stay overnight at the lighthouse keepers’ cottage, which I have added to my bucket list.

Here are some shots I took to remember my visit.
